I make art in my studio on the East coast of Scotland. My work includes painting, collage, printmaking and ceramics, focusing on texture, colour and compositon. I love a concoction of different materials to build up layers and interesting surfaces. Inspiration comes from all over - environment, mood, music, places, weather…
I was born in Yorkshire and moved to Scotland in the early 1990s for my Fine Art Degree at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. I have been making art in my studio since then, for many years in Edinburgh and now beside the sea in Cellardyke in the East Neuk of Fife. I have a wide range of teaching experience, specialising in printmaking.
Teaching
I have spent many years teaching, and find it a rewarding part of my work. I've worked extensively within secondary education, but also community settings and primary schools. I held positions as both Art Teacher and Artist in Residence at Fettes College, Edinburgh and then spent 15 years as Artist in Resident at St Leonards school, St Andrews, teaching printmaking to final year IB students.
I run printmaking workshops at various locations around Edinburgh and Fife. I have three etching presses that travel with me, and all the materials needed to set up a printmaking studio within community venues. This makes printmaking accessible to all, whether artists or complete beginners.

Ceramics
I have recently started working on ceramic pieces, hand building structures with clay slabs. I love the ability to create three dimensional pictures, building up surfaces in exactly the same way as I would a painting or print, layering glazes and playing with brushwork and different applications. I have started to incorporate monoprint onto ceramics and am excited by the huge range of surface possibilities. I have recently started making ceramics which pick up the surface texture of my printmaking plates. I roll slabs over collagraph and lino prints and create richly textured vessels.
Painting, printmaking and collage
My work explores surface, texture, colour, composition and the qualities of layering. I work intuitively with a wide range of different materials. I often combine different marks made from painting, drawing and printmaking. I have experimented with almost all forms of printmaking, but find the techniques of monoprint and collagraph allow the most freedom to react as I would with a painting. I work mainly from my studio at home using a large Rollaco etching press. My final pieces are almost exclusively one-off works, not numbered editions of work printed from the same plate. I might spend weeks building up layers and layers of paint or print, in order to achieve the richness of surface I am looking for.
